Deptford History

Now I have been to Deptford a couple of times I decided to research the History of Deptford.
Back in the 19th Century Deptford was a large ship building and fishing town known for its dockyard. The docks were the main administrative centre of the British Navy at that point.
However the area declined as first the Royal Navy moved out, and then the commercial docks themselves declined until the last dock, Convoys Wharf, closed in 2000.

As I started to research Deptford's history more and more I discovered these amazing old pictures of Deptford.
These included the bridge on Deptford high street below -

Deptford's historic Dockyard.

As well as old family Pictures from Family's within Deptford.
I especially love this picture, I love the knee high socks, jumper over shirt combo and cute peter pan collar.

Deptford Market Day

Deptford Market takes place along Deptford Hight street on a Saturday and Wednesday. There are many weird and wonderful stalls down there selling an ary of different products from food to bedding, brick a brack, jewellery and clothing new and old. Many of the items are very cheap including one clothing stall that sells most items for £1 - £3.

The Deptford project also has a smaller craft market on market days selling different hand crafted items such as oyster card holders, cards, jewellery and toys.

Art District Creekside - Deptford

Today I visited the art district of Deptford known as Creekside. There are many different art institutions down there including Cockpit arts, Creekside Artists, Art Hub and the Laban dance centre. Many of these provide studio space for artists and also gallery space to display artists work. Below are some pictures I took on my trip as well as flyers I picked up form around the area.

New Cross

During my third visit to Deptford I decided to venture a bit further a field and head down to New cross to see what this area had to offer.
The first thing I stumbled across was New cross station it was quiet a busy station with good travel links, with it only taking 12 minuted to reach London Bridge from there.

Above Maps of the New Cross Deptford area located outside the station.

Whist walking down towards New cross I stumbled across a very sweet homely little cafe called London Particular. Serving hot and cold food and drinks including the "builders" mug of tea, and one of the yummiest hot chocolates I have stumbled across :)

Above the Amersham arms pub, which serves drinks and food and often holds music events as well as also having a gallery space to display artists work.

Above Deptford Town Hall and Goldsmiths university.

Deptford take two

Today was my second visit to Deptford, as my visit was during the day I decided to go and have a look around the main highstreet and see what it had to offer. My first impressions to be honest was that Deptford is just a little rough round the edges however after wondering around for a little while I started to uncover some hidden Gems within Deptford. These included :-

Rag and Bone - A vintage Boutique which sells and recycles clothing

Bearspace - Gallery allowing artists to exhibit their own work, as well as selling current arty magazines, books and postcards

Deptford Project - An old train carrige which has been converted into a cafe with seats inside and decking and chairs to also sit an eat outside.

First impressions I have to be honest were why on earth have we been sent here of all places !!! However I persevered and strolled along new cross road looking for some where to stop and have a drink.
